The city’s floral displays have been awarded at the RHS Britain in Bloom 2011 awards at the weekend with Derry-Londonderry securing the Small City category award at the prestigious finals.
Paying tribute to everyone involved, the Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney said it was a tremendous coup for the city and was reflective of the hard work carried out by the Council and its strategic partners and local businesses in making the city colourful and welcoming.
A few weeks back the city also won the coveted City category prize at the Ulster in Bloom awards securing a place to represent Northern Ireland in the finals of the Britain in Bloom 2012 competition next year.
The Mayor said the city was looking particularly good this year with everyone working collectively to make the city a welcoming place,.
.
Danny McCartney, Grounds Maintenance and Cemeteries Manager for Derry City Council said it was a great honour to receive the award on behalf of the Council and the Pride in our City Campaign. "A lot of hard work and effort has gone into this year's campaign and we have made considerable progress in improving on how the city is presented. Our floral displays across the city have been really well received and the feedback we have been getting from the public has been very positive. The award is recognition of the work carried out by everyone involved, in particular our own Grounds Maintenance staff."
