WIE GOOD STORIES – LAPTOP DONATION SCHEME – NEW 2 YOU 4Rs

Nuala Griffiths, Recycling Manager, 4Rs Recycling Centre

Our members continue to make a positive difference during lockdown. Nuala Griffiths, WIE Committee Member and new Manager of the 4Rs Recycling Centre in Pennyburn, Derry is working on an amazing programme helping children and their families in need.

Children have been expected to engage in remote learning with an expectation that families can provide suitable devices for all children in the household to use along with suitable broadband. Unfortunately, IT poverty is a growing issue as not all families and children have access to or can afford the necessary equipment due to the financial pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working in conjunction with Eoghan Barr, IT specialist and teacher at Lumen Christi College, 4Rs Recycling Centre and Derryware Donations, Nuala is spearheading the “New 2 You 4Rs” programme that is upcycling devices for children in the North West.

Unwanted and unused laptops and/or tablets that are still in good condition may be donated and will be revamped into Chromebooks for local children learning from home due to the pandemic. Originally, only laptops donations were requested, but because the requests for repurposed systems are greatly exceeding donations, any working tablets will also be reset for younger children to use.

The devices will have their hard drive formatted and installed with a new lighter system (Never ware Cloud Ready Home Edition) that provides web browser functionality and access to Google Classroom. Devices will be PAT tested, revamped, and then passed on to a child/family in need.

Device donations may be placed in a sealed plastic bag with the charger and left in a box next to the Furniture Donation Point at:
New 2 You 4Rs in Pennyburn Recycling Centre, Unit 23, Pennyburn Industrial Estate in Derry City, between 10am-12noon.
